Creativity in advertising is endless and the number of touchpoints between consumer and brands is hard to measure. Sometimes a brand’s appearance will pass unobserved, while other times it will remain unforgettable. 

One of the areas where we least expect to see a familiar brand is in cartoons. Because brands are real while cartoons are fantasy, right?

Since the 1930s – when one famous seaman got kids into eating more spinach and veggies – product placement became prevalent.

There are several examples of fantasy brands that have stepped into reality due to the show’s popularity – Duff Beer, Bubba Gump Shrimp, the Wonka chocolate bar. 

But how do we feel when we see real brands of our daily life used by cartoon characters? Pete Griffin of Family Guy sips his Red Bull, South Park characters drink Dr. Pepper and a new, popular manga production, Ghost in the Shell, features the Microsoft tablet around its characters.

We have to wonder, does product placement in cartoons bring the fantasy world closer to reality or does it make it harder for people to relate to the brand…?
